Wadden Sea National Park (green)

The Wadden Sea biosphere reserve (Wattenmeer) is considered the largest tidal flats system in the world and is declared a UNESCO World Heritage.  It is constantly changing due to the tides, and it’s crucial to observe the timing when hiking out by yourself.

The diversity of the landscape makes the Wadden Sea biosphere a unique habitat for many animal and plant species.

Located just in front of the mainland coast, the East Frisian islands are a highly popular – yet peaceful getaway with health spas and charming Bed & Breakfast Inns. The islands have been shaped by the eternal change of tides for centuries, and are framed with sand beaches and dunes. Unlike the North Frisian islands, the East Frisian islands were never connected to the mainland. Over the ages, they migrated gradually from west to east and are still in motion to this day.

As early as in 1835, the island of Helgoland became the destination for researchers for the marine glow around the island. Scientist C. Ehrenberg proved that it was caused by a tiny unicellular organism. At the end of the 18. century, the Royal Biological Institute was founded and Helgoland was recognized for marine biology research. The Second World War completely destroyed the Biological Institute and it was not reopened until 1959.  Today, it is governed by the Alfred Wegner Institut for Polar and Marine Research.

Halunder is the old language of Helgoland. Helgoland’s Frisian dialect is only spoken by less than 1,000 people today. In order to keep it alive, it is taught in schools. It is also the official language of the island besides the standard German language.

The glowing of the ocean is truly a spectacular experience. Just passing your hand through the water in a hot July or August night will activate the glow. Imagine taking a night bath!

Experience the unique Wadden Sea biosphere reserve for yourself!  We are traveling in small, private groups in order to create an intimate atmosphere.  Upon request, the tour can be modified to accommodate wheelchair travelers.  Find tour details here, and also please check for updates on our Facebook page.
